A Meningie footballer has copped a three-match ban for a sickening punch in the River Murray Football League last week.

The punch was thrown when a scuffle broke out among players in the round one match between Meningie and Jervois on Saturday.

The incident was caught on camera and referred to the league’s tribunal.

“A Meningie player was subsequently reported and received a four-match ban from the RMFL, reduced to three matches after he accepted the sanction with an early guilty plea,” an SANFL spokesman said.

“Based on the available evidence including the umpire’s report, the striking incident was classified as intentional and that the contact made was high.”

SANFL Community Football regulations means the clubs can appeal the decision should they deem the penalty is inadequate.

The River Murray Football League refused to comment.
