DANISH authorities are holding an accomplice of predator Shannon McCoole responsible for child rapes committed by other men because the duo encouraged it on their website.

McCoole, who preyed on vulnerable child victims through his role with Families SA, and his Danish counterpart were the administrators of the site, which required members to post new abuse pictures every 30 days or face a ban.

Prosecutors have told the northern European court that McCoole’s accomplice, 48, should be held jointly responsible for 22 child rapes that were published on the site.

McCoole, who has given evidence to the court against his co-offender, was sentenced to 35 years with a non-parole period of 28 years for urging others to transmit child pornography, among a raft of other sexual abuse charges, but was not specifically charged with rape over the assaults committed by other site users.

His Danish co-offender has admitted playing a central role in the site, but claims he cannot be held responsible for rapes committed by members.

The man has also denied accusations of trying to buy an infant from Romania so he could abuse it.

The man has also admitted to filming and sexually abusing the four children of one of his friends. The trial over his alleged role in the 22 rapes is continuing. The website had ensured frequent abuse of children by demanding from its members new abuse videos and images of children every month. Proof the material was “new and rare” was established by signs pictured with the victims before, during or after the abuse.

The trial comes as a Royal Commission begins today into the child protection system “shortfalls” that let McCoole to abuse those in his care.

Child Protection Systems Royal Commissioner Margaret Nyland has revealed she will launch a six-week study into the case and expects to call more than 80 witnesses.

Determined police work from Queensland child sex task force, Argos, and SAPOL eventually led to the arrest of McCoole at his Oaklands Park home in June 2014.

He was identified through a freckle on his finger in one of the child abuse photos. His co-offender was later tracked by police using McCoole’s username and password.

Child Protection expert Freda Briggs said United Nations studies had proved that child exploitation and pornography were multi-billion dollar businesses.

“Given the lifelong physical and psychological harm inflicted by child sex abuse on victims, the cost to society and the taxpayer, governments should take all possible measures to deter people from engaging in this obnoxious, harmful business,” she said.
