A well-loved playground in one of SA’s most popular coastal tourist towns is set to receive a complete overhaul.
Robe Council has endorsed a design for the Robe Street playground upgrade after locals voted for one of seven submitted designs.
On Tuesday, Victorian playground maker Omnitech’s design was revealed as the “overwhelming community favourite”.
Omnitech’s design, described by the council as “innovative”, features nature play, basketball half-court, cubby house and rope nets, all aimed at fostering creativity and active play.
Construction is set to begin in February next year and be completed by April.
The playground, which is popular with locals and tourists, is behind Mahalia Coffee and Holiday Trading & Co.
In November 2023, the council assigned funding toward upgrading the playground and asked locals for feedback on what equipment it wanted.
Council CEO Nat Traeger said the current playground had “become outdated and less appealing”.
“Our goal with the playground upgrade is to activate under-utilised areas and provide a diverse range of inclusive and interactive equipment suitable for children of all ages,” Ms Traeger said.
“This playground is a vital asset to our community, and its sheltered location is particularly advantageous given Robe’s seasonal weather.”
Ms Traeger said the council was optimistic about future funding to allow more improvements including additional equipment, shade structures and shelters.
“Our vision is to create a truly exceptional play area that families will love for years to come.”
