Mali's failure to “fix” ramping exposed

Marion ambulance station, the biggest station in Adelaide’s southern suburbs, will be bulldozed and replaced with a brand new fit-for-purpose centre.

The facility was initially set to be upgraded but at the June state budget it was announced it would instead be rebuilt at a cost of $9m.

The new station – due to be completed and operational by late 2026 – will include garage space for seven ambulances and one light fleet vehicle, and two outdoor undercover spaces.

There will also be storerooms, a dirty utility area, linen storage, a drug store, and a training area.

Marion station, which in 2023 managed nearly 19,000 incidents, will be home to 46 paramedics.

During the construction period next year, Marion crews will operate from nearby stations to ensure uninterrupted service to the community.

Health Minister Chris Picton said the new station would help ambos better respond to emergencies in the area.

“Rebuilding on the existing site maintains a strategic location for our paramedics to respond quickly to emergencies across the southern suburbs,” he said.

“This accessibility is crucial for delivering timely care when it matters most.”

SA Ambulance Service chief executive Rob Elliott said the rebuild would preserve a well-established hub.

“Our Marion crews work exceptionally hard, and we are proud to progress with delivering them a state-of-the-art facility for deployment and training that will support them to deliver the highest standard of care to those in need,” he said.
