A man has died and a woman in a serious but stable condition after crashing in to a tree at Strathalbyn.

The man, 64, of Mitcham, who was a passenger in the car, was rushed to Mt Barker hospital with serious injuries but could not be saved.

His Toyota four-wheel-drive crashed into a tree about 6am on Thursday at the intersection of High St and South Tce.

The driver, a 69-year-old woman, also from Mitcham, was taken to the Royal Adelaide Hospital with serious injuries, but was stable.

The state’s road toll is now 52, compared with 45 at the same time last year.
