Young man critical after jumping off Festival Plaza balcony trying to flee from police

A man has been critically injured when he jumped off a Festival Plaza balcony in a bid to flee from police.

A man in a critical condition after jumping off a balcony at the Festival Plaza.

Police were investigating an alleged theft that occurred near the Festival Plaza, and approached the Gepps Cross man just after 2.15am on Tuesday.

He spoke to police for a short while before running off and jumping from a plaza balcony, falling about three metres on to the ground below.

Officers were able to provide first aid to the young man before he was taken to the Royal Adelaide Hospital where he remains in a critical condition.

Police said they are continuing to investigate the circumstances that led to the incident.

“The circumstances surrounding the theft are under investigation, so are the circumstances regarding the interaction between the man and police,” Assistant Commissioner Stuart McLean said.

Police Minister Joe Szakacs said he was “very sorry for the nature” of the incident.
