MALCOLM Turnbull has confirmed the Government will this week release its long-awaited plan to overhaul the way GST is carved up among states.
The Prime Minister promised the change would “pass the pub test” in Burnie, Bunbury, Bundaberg, Bathurst and Bendigo but did not mention any town in South Australia, such as Bridgewater in the seat of Mayo.
But Government sources said the SA would be looked after under the plan.
“Our commitment is to have a GST system that is fair,” Mr Turnbull said.
“The goal, as I said, is to ensure that all states are treated fairly and that no state is worse off. We will have more to say about it during the week.”
The Productivity Commission has reviewed the way the cash was split between states and handed its report to the Government in May.
The draft report, released last year, suggested changes which would have seen almost every state lose part of its share to boost Western Australia’s take. Recent polling indicates the Government could lose a slew of seats in WA.
