City workers and the Queen Elizabeth Hospital were evacuated after an earthquake that rocked rural Victoria on Wednesday morning was also felt across South Australia.
The magnitude 6.0 quake struck near Mansfield north of Melbourne at 9.15am, AEST.
The Seismology Centre said a 5.3-magnitude quake was recorded in Gippsland, suggesting the epicentre was about 100km from Melbourne.
The quake was reportedly felt as far afield as NSW, the ACT and Tasmania, with several reports in Adelaide.
An SA Health spokeswoman confirmed department staff were evacuated from its Hindmarsh Square offices.
A number of people were also evacuated from the Queen Elizabeth Hospital for about an hour while assessment of the building was undertaken, but had since been allowed back into the building.
“While we are confident that the building is safe, staff are asked to report any smell of gas or water leakage or anything unusual to the engineering team, we will continue to monitor as a precaution,” Lesley Dwyer, chief executive of the Central Adelaide Local Health Network said.
Geoscience Australia confirmed the event in a tweet.
A second, magnitude 4 quake was recorded about 18 minutes after the first.

Graeme Fell was in his caravan when his surroundings began to shake for around 10 seconds at 9am.
“I was lying in bed and everything was shaking, really rocking,” Mr Fell, who is staying at the Adelaide Caravan Park at Hackney, said.
“I said to my wife (Mavis), ‘It’s a tremor’, and she said it was the wind, but the trees weren’t moving.
“Nothing fell off the shelves or anything, but we thought someone was playing a joke on us, pushing on the caravan.”
The Victorian couple spent four months in Broome and about a month in South Australia and are planning to head home in coming weeks.
