$12m Golden Grove shopping centre plan gets through check-out

Messenger North: A $12 MILLION shopping centre in Golden Grove is finally set to go ahead more than eight years after plans were first announced.

A $12 MILLION shopping centre in Golden Grove is finally set to go ahead more than eight years after plans were first announced.

Construction on The Stables shopping centre, on the corner of Crouch and Golden Grove roads, was given the green light following a Tea Tree Gully Council decision at Tuesday night’s meeting.

The construction start date had hinged on whether the council decided to restrict access along Crouch Rd to delivery trucks to prevent congestion at the shopping centre.

Elected members voted 8:2 in favour of the closure, which would force 600 cars that use the road each day to drive an extra 3km to find an alternative route.

Cr Todd Hacking, who voted in favour of the motion, told the meeting there was a need for a shopping centre to service the 600-home Settlement housing estate.

“Does the need for a shopping centre outweigh the extra 3km for local residents who have to go further end of One Tree Hill or Golden Grove roads to use the intersection,” Cr Hacking said.

“The answer to that question is yes.”

Community consultation by the council and developer Polaris Property Group on the road closure saw 79 of 128 respondents in favour of the road closure.

The shopping centre, expected to open late next year, is earmarked to create almost 250 jobs and will include a supermarket, 60-space childcare centre, medical clinic and 16 speciality shops.
