The Lucy Paveley hit-run tragedy

“WE do not encourage bitterness, anger or revenge”: these are the words from a heartbroken father and husband, whose wife was killed in a hit-run smash at Parafield on Sunday morning.

Jamie Paveley, the husband of victim Lucy, requested the simple eight words be included with a touching statement by AnglicareSA, where Mrs Paveley was headed for her early-morning shift when her Nissan Micra was allegedly hit by a stolen 4WD driven by a teenager.

AnglicareSA CEO Peter Sandeman said there had been a huge outpouring of support for Mrs Paveley’s family since the smash, from AnglicareSA staff, the aged-care residents and their families and the general public.

“We have stayed close to the family this week — this is a beautiful family that has been overwhelmed by the support people have shown in the darkest moment of their lives,” Mr Sandeman said.

“They have asked that we share how grateful they are for the amazing outpouring of care and concern from the wider community.

“The family advised they are taking great comfort from the love that people are expressing.

“They want us all to know that they are managing, and are certainly comforted by people’s kindness.

“Lucy’s husband Jamie said that he very much appreciates that people want to support him and the children and that this is helping with the healing process.

“It is heartwarming to see that in the face of such a sad and senseless tragedy people have rallied together to direct their energy in the form of love and support to Jamie and their children.

“It is often in such times of tragedy that people feel the need to do something as part of their own way of dealing with their sadness.

“The team and residents at AnglicareSA Elizabeth Dutton Court have started their own collection box to support Lucy’s family.

“We are also directing our staff to the GoFundMe donation site set up by Jamie’s workmates.”

Moments after Mr Sandeman’s statement was released, Mr Paveley asked that his words be added: “We do not encourage bitterness, anger or revenge.”

The GoFundMe site has seen nearly $10,000 raised in just two days, as South Australians rally around Mrs Paveley’s family, on top of at least $10,000 from Mr Paveley’s colleagues.

Friends and family have raised thousands of dollars for her chef husband Jamie, 38, and their two young children, a daughter, aged 8 and her 7 year-old brother.

As friends continued to support the family at their Mawson Lakes homes, the children's’ northern suburb primary school also announced plans for a fundraiser disco on Friday.

On Wednesday Mrs Paveley’s social media account was transformed into a memorial page.

“We hope that people who love Lucy will find comfort in visiting her profile to remember and celebrate her life,” a blurb said.

The GoFundMe page was organised by Mr Paveley’s work manager, Charlie Bowman, who told The Advertiser donations would help the grieving family.

“A few of his work colleagues have been asking how they can help and I thought we could set up a GoFundMe page online,” he said.

“He (Mr Paveley) would be horrified that people are donating money to him, he doesn’t want people to make a fuss but he’s going to need it.”

Mr Bowman, the manager of an eastern suburbs hotel where Mr Paveley worked, said colleagues and friends had raised more than $10,000.

But he increased the online target to $20,000 due to the generous public response.

Her employer AnglicareSA are planning to hold a memorial service following the funeral while staff at Elizabeth Dutton Court are supporting Ms Paveley’s children.

An AnglicareSA spokeswoman said staff “specifically wanted to make a financial contribution to the Paveley childrens’ future”, residents were also making personal donations and strangers were leaving flowers.

“Support shown for the Paveleys has been amazing,” she said.

The northern suburbs school community are planning to donate cash and household items from an event to be held on Friday.

Donation boxes will also be available, the school’s fundraising committee said. The school principal said the discos would occur tomorrow afternoon and into the evening.

“Our Governing Council and fundraising committee will be donating a proportion of the profits raised from ticket and food sales, directly to the Paveley family,” he said.

A Governing council spokesman added: “I’m sure we can all empathise with how hard it must be coming to grips with losing her and having family so far away in the UK.”

The Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation SA Branch is also exploring options.

“Lucy was a dedicated carer ... with a very bright future as an Enrolled Nurse,” it said.
