A 37-year-old learner driver has been arrested after being spotted driving on the wrong side of the road and allegedly returning a breath test reading more than four times the limit in the northern suburbs in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Police were travelling south on the Salisbury Hwy when they spied a vehicle travelling towards them with their high beams and on the wrong side of the road, just after 12.30am.

Patrols switched on their emergency lights in a bid to stop the vehicle but the driver allegedly refused and continued travelling north.

The vehicle was veering side to side in its lane at Salisbury, almost colliding with oncoming vehicles, police allege.

The car eventually came to stop at the intersection of the Salisbury Hwy and Park Tce where the driver was removed from the vehicle by police.

The male driver was breath tested and allegedly returned a positive reading of .213.

The Elizabeth Vale man was arrested and charged with driving under the influence, driving without due care and three breaches of learner driver conditions.

He will be released on bail and will attend the Elizabeth Magistrates Court at a later date.
