Lower Eyre Council wants to have seafood available for purchase from a vending machine at the Port Lincoln Airport

A regional council wants to add a vending machine to its airport. But it’s the choice of product that has everyone talking. Take our poll.

The Lower Eyre Council is inviting expressions of interest from local seafood businesses to have seafood available for purchase at the Port Lincoln Airport from a vending machine.

The council is claiming the initiative would provide a “unique opportunity” for a local producer to showcase and sell their product, with an average of 500 passengers using the airport per day.

“It has been recognised this innovation will likely generate revenue for the airport and local seafood sales, while providing a unique local retail experience,” the council outlined in a project overview.

However, the idea is not completely original with Oyster HQ at Coffin Bay – about 50 kilometres from Port Lincoln on the Eyre Peninsula, boasting Australia’s only Oyster Vending Machine.

Oyster HQ claim the machine is only the second of its kind in the world and dispenses oysters, prawns and mussels, 24/7.

The airport initiative would see council purchase the specialised vending machine outright and partner with a local supplier by way of open tender.

The council says the vendor would be responsible for the day-to-day management of the vending machine including stock supply and rotation, cleaning, and meet all safe food handling and health requirements.

The Lower Eyre Council is inviting expressions of interests until October 30.
