Creating an innovation hub at Lot Fourteen and launching a social media strategy to lure more overseas workers and tourists to South Australia will be key priorities in an implementation plan for the $551 million Adelaide City Deal.
The plan – aimed at turning Adelaide into an international drawcard for hi-tech businesses, overseas students and tourists – will be unveiled on Thursday and sets a New Year deadline for its first projects.
It shows the State Government will contribute $364 million to the 10-year Adelaide City Deal. The Adelaide City Council will pitch in $12.6 million and the Federal Government $174 million.
Federal Population, Cities and Urban Infrastructure Minister Alan Tudge will on Thursday unveil the plan with Premier Steven Marshall and Adelaide Lord Mayor Sandy Verschoor.
The plan reveals that between now and the New Year, the State Government will be expected to:
FINALISE a high-level concept design for the Innovation Hub at Lot Fourteen;
COMPLETE the fit-out to make way for the Australian Space Agency;
RELEASE a draft science and innovation strategy to guide the growth of Adelaide’s economy;
LAUNCH a social media strategy aimed at luring more international students to South Australia, and;
DELIVER a Master Plan for the LeFevre Peninsula.
The deal has also revealed that SA’s special Designated Area Migration Agreement – which makes it easier for overseas workers and students to call the state home – will cease in 2025.
Mr Tudge said the implementation plan was a vital step to rolling out the 10-year deal.
“This is a great partnership .... which will deliver projects to enhance Adelaide’s reputation as a great place to live, visit, study and work,” he said.
“We’ve already made significant progress. More than $100 million in construction contracts have been awarded at Lot Fourteen, which is set to become one of the world’s leading centres for entrepreneurs, start-ups and innovation.”
Mr Marshall said a number of key projects under the deal would transform Lot Fourteen into the innovation centre of the nation and boost local jobs.
“This deal represents a real turning point for South Australia’s economy and paints a bright picture for the future of our state,” he said.
“The Adelaide City Deal has a focus on transforming Lot Fourteen into a job-generating, nation-leading innovation hub, while also boosting our cultural economy and busting congestions on our roads.”
The Adelaide City Deal was struck in the lead-up to the May Federal Election.
