Looking for a sweet deal? Sugar is up for sale

It’s hosted the biggest DJs – and the biggest parties – but now it’s time for this Rundle Street institution to write a new chapter, says owner Driller Jet Armstrong.

Got around half a million bucks and a love of late nights?

Then you could be the new owner of Sugar, one of the city’s most storied and loved nightclubs.

The Rundle Street institution is up for sale and owner – Adelaide arts personality Driller Jet Armstrong – said now was the chance for someone to continue the party.

And what do you get for the sale price?

“You get 20 years of culture, that’s what you get,” Armstrong said.

“You get an amazing rental property, a great lease, a 5am liquor licence and you get the legacy of the over 850 international artists that have grace the turntables at the club.”

Armstrong said everyone from Detroit techno god Jeff Mills to modern dance phenomena like Honey Dijon and Floating Points have played at the club over the years.

He said he’ll miss the nightclub, which he described as “a 20-year long art project”.

“I’ll miss it, but you go through life and you miss things, you miss people, you miss a lot of things along the way,” Armstrong said.

“But it’s time for me to move on, I want to do other things.”

Sugar has weathered tough times in recent years, with Covid restrictions and rising insurance costs having an impact on business.

“Dancefloors were the most dangerous place to be in the whole world for a while there,” Armstrong laughed.

The club closed its doors in December, with Armstrong describing the week leading up to the closing as “the most beautiful week of my entire life”.

Sugar is, according to its owner, “worth what it’s worth”.

“The definition of a good deal is one where both parties are either happy or unhappy, but we’d be looking for something around the half a million mark. We currently have an offer on the table for $600,000 which is under consideration.”

The price is walk in-walk out, with all of the club’s fittings – including what Armstrong called “one of Australia’s best sound systems” – included in the sale price.
