The iconic Port Adelaide fixture Jaffers Furniture is closing its doors after 91 years of serving the community.
The family business known for its distinctive red and yellow storefront and block typeface announced the sad news on social media on Wednesday.
“It is with sadness that after decades of hard work, dedication to local manufacturers and suppliers and support for her local community, the time has come for Heather Jaffer to retire,” the post read.
The SA relic has spanned four generations over the course of nine decades, catering to local and regional customers around Adelaide.
Max and Ena Jaffer first established the family legacy in 1934 after purchasing one out of six cottages on St Vincent Street to establish the furniture store.
Since then, they went on to buy the remaining five cottages that would become the existing showroom today.
Roger and Heather Jaffer had continued to uphold the family business until Roger’s passing in 2022, with Heather taking over the reins until now.
The business expressed their gratitude to their loyal customers and families in SA who have “supported them through the decades”, and their thanks to the “whole Port Adelaide/peninsula community who have embraced Jaffers Furniture since the very beginning.”
