Locals raise alarm over see-through public toilet doors at Allenby Gardens Reserve

Locals have rushed to council to have a bizarre public toilet debacle fixed, fearing the odd design — next to a playground — could put children’s safety at risk.

A public toilet block in the western suburbs has sparked confusion and safety concerns after locals discovered its cubicle doors were see-through.

Local resident Felicity Graham raised the alarm over the bathrooms at Allenby Gardens Reserve last Friday, noticing that those outside the doors could see directly into the toilets.

Ms Graham said she feared vulnerable children could be put at risk by the design of the cubicles, which sit next to a popular playground, oval and sporting facilities.

“These doors have apparently been here for years and no-one thought it was an issue,” Ms Graham told 7NEWS.

Locals echoed Ms Graham’s concerns, saying they believed the design was inappropriate and an infringement on people’s privacy.

“I come here all the time with my three children and I wouldn’t feel comfortable sending them to the toilet,” resident Brianna Warne said.

City of Charles Sturt general manager of asset management Adrian Ralph said the toilet block had recently been repaired after being targeted by vandals — but the privacy issue had not been addressed.

Temporary screens have been put up in the block following Ms Graham’s inquiries, with new doors to be installed as a matter of urgency.

“Charles Sturt recognises these doors do not provide adequate privacy,” Mr Ralph said.

“Our intent is to create safe public spaces and increase passive surveillance, however these doors are not appropriate and will be fixed.”
