LIV Golf 2024: Adelaide set to remain Australia’s only tournament

Leaked documents have revealed whether SA will retain sole LIV Golf hosting duties for 2024 – as a major announcement from the premier looms.

Adelaide tournament gave LIV Golf a ‘foothold’ in Australia

Adelaide is set to remain Australia’s only LIV Golf event in 2024, should the Saudi-backed tour live on, despite pushes from several states to piggyback off the raging success of the inaugural tournament in SA.

Premier Peter Malinauskas says an announcement is imminent over next year’s event, which is poised to kick off the LIV season.

Several Australian states – including Queensland, NSW and Western Australia – were among a group of nearly 50 different entities from various countries who put in bids to host tournaments in 2024.

While leaked details of a proposed 2024 schedule listed Australia as a host country, it is understood that all were unsuccessful – with Adelaide remaining the sole LIV Golf event.

It is understood that both South Korea and Hong Kong will instead be added to the international roster.

The sold-out event in April attracted 77,000 people across three days – the biggest-attended event in the tour’s inaugural season – and was regarded as a watershed moment for Greg Norman’s Saudi-backed league.

Earlier this week, Adelaide’s event was named the World’s Best Golf Event of the Year 2023 at the World Golf Awards.

Premier Peter Malinauskas said SA’s risk had paid off, with Adelaide now cemented on the world golfing map.

“Those who attended the Grange Golf Course in April know how special it was – and now we’ve had official confirmation that this is the best golf event on the planet,” he said.

While discussions ongoing between the PGA Tour and the Saudi Public Investment Fund over the final shape of their new arrangement, tour officials are pushing on with plans for 2024.

It is understood the Adelaide leg of the tournament will be brought forward and could open the LIV season, with a February 2-4 date at the Grange Golf Club believed to be the “frontrunner” among a host of options.

Another date in April, closer to the 2023 event schedule, is also being considered.

Mr Malinauskas said an announcement of details for the 2024 Adelaide event would be made in coming weeks.
