Liberals face accusations of a broken promise on answering questions within 30 days

The Marshall Government swore it would never leave questions unanswered longer than 30 days. Now nearly 70 pending queries remain on the books. SEE THE LIST.

Your Right To Know Campaign

Almost 70 parliamentary questions on topics including land tax and heritage reform are yet to be answered, despite a State Government promise to do so within 30 days.

The transparency pledge, made by the Liberals when in Opposition, has been let down by 68 unanswered questions — all of them to Premier Steven Marshall or Infrastructure Minister Stephan Knoll.

The pair are yet to respond to a raft of questions, including the number of people affected by land-tax reforms and the amount of damage developers cause to council infrastructure.

More than a third of the unanswered questions relate to planning issues.

They have also failed to respond to questions about government interest costs and Home Start finance.

In January 2017, then Opposition treasury spokesman Rob Lucas condemned the former Labor government’s “contempt for democracy” and pledged to make it mandatory for questions on notice to be answered within 30 days, if the Liberals were elected.

Only four of the 111 questions taken on notice by Labor in 2017 were answered.

Opposition government accountability spokesman Tom Koutsantonis said the Marshall Government made a clear commitment to answer all questions on notice within 30 days.

“Yet there are currently 68 unanswered questions which were asked more than 30 days ago,” Mr Koutsantonis, pictured, said. “Not one, not two, but 68 breaches of Steven Marshall’s own promise.”

A State Government spokesman said since the election, 1540 of 1638 questions had been answered in the House of Assembly, while the former government left office with 2280 unanswered questions.

“The reality is that this government is far more open and accountable than the previous Labor administration, who prided itself on delay tactics,” he said.

“We have set ourselves a task to answer all questions within 30 days and make every attempt to reach that.”

The oldest unanswered question was to Mr Marshall about US firm Berkshire Hathaway.

The company, led by chairman and CEO Warren Buffett, established operations in Adelaide in December when it took over management of the Motor Accident Commission’s “back book” of Compulsory Third Party vehicle insurance claims.
