Leaking roof at Netball SA Stadium ahead of Thunderbirds clash with Collingwood Magpies

There have been more issues at the state’s run-down premier netball venue causing a game to be abandoned, less than 48 hours out from the Thunderbirds taking on Collingwood at home.

Netball fans have taken to social media, frustrated by more issues at the state’s run-down premier netball venue, leading to another game being abandoned midway through.

The Adelaide Thunderbirds are scheduled to host the Collingwood Magpies at Netball SA Stadium tomorrow at 3.30pm but officials are believed to be on high alert given Friday night’s incident which involved a call being called off due to water leaking onto the court.

The NSA Stadium roof leaked onto court 4 during the Premier League match between Oakdale and Metro Jets, forcing the match to be abandoned early in the third quarter after players reportedly slipped on the water. The game will now be completed Monday night.

A disappointed fan took to social media on Friday as the issue presented itself, saying: “The roof is leaking as it does every winter and never gets repaired.

“Game has been stopped just after half time after players slipped in it and noticed the water dripping on (to the) court … the roof has had a leak for years.”

She also claimed spectators weren’t offered a refund.

A spokeswoman for Netball SA and the Thunderbirds said Friday night’s incident would not impact on this weekend’s Super Netball clash.

“The leak on court 4 ... does not pose a risk to the show court on which the SSN match between the Adelaide Thunderbirds and Collingwood Magpies will take place on Sunday,” she said.

She said the leak, which happened near an aiconditioner unit, had now been repaired.

“Like all major stadiums, Netball SA conducts regular maintenance and has continually had to increase the stadium maintenance plan due to the ageing nature of the facility,” she said.

“Netball SA has been in talks for a long time with the State Government regarding a new first-class facility for netball, and current investment discussions are ongoing ... (it) deserves a first class facility.”

The stadium, built in the mid-1990s but promoted on the state government’s website as being “a world-class purpose built netball stadium” has suffered repeated setbacks in recent weeks.

Last month the Thunderbirds-Swifts clash was abandoned at half time and declared a draw after a power failure to the stadium’s transformer, which also hasn’t been upgraded since 1997.

It was slammed on the Suncorp Super Netball website as “a chaotic night in Adelaide … after the game was called off at half-time due to a power outage.”
