The driver of a luxury car which crashed off a southern suburbs road, killing Sophia Naismith and seriously injuring her friend, had been told he needed to replace his worn-down tyres just days before the crash, a court has heard.

Alexander Campbell, was behind the wheel of a $330,000 white Lamborghini Huracan with the licence plate PSYKO on June 22, 2019 when he crashed off the road.

He is standing trial in the District Court on charges of causing death and harm by dangerous driving.

On Tuesday, mechanic Vincenzo Francesco told the court Mr Campbell had come to Zagame Automotive Group on June 17, 2019 for a regular service.

Mr Francesco said Mr Campbell was told his rear tyres needed to be replaced as they were worn below the manufacturer’s minimum recommended thickness.

He also said the front brake discs and pads needed to be replaced.

Mr Francesco told him that replacement tyres would need to be dispatched from Sydney and would take two days to arrive.

“(Mr Campbell) said to me that he would take care of the tyres and not to worry about it and that he would come later in the afternoon to pick the car up,” he said.

“I relayed the message twice to the client that the tyres were low and needed replacing and both times the client stated that he would take care of the tyres and not to worry about it.”

Forensic tyre expert Norris Tennent told the court via video link up from Nashville, Tennessee that the state of the tyres combined with the cold conditions and the power of the car created a recipe for disaster.

“That is a very big engine in a very light automobile,” he said.

“So it is going to have lot more horsepower than a lot of other ultra high performance vehicles such as Ferrari or McLaren.”

Mr Tennent said the tyres were “slicks” – or lacking any tread.

“Those tyres are easily worn out; they should have been removed from the vehicle,” he said.

Mr Campbell is alleged to have been driving in one of the car’s sports modes with additional traction control disabled.

“If you turn off the (safety controls) you are setting yourself up to have a whole lot of vehicle to deal with,” he said

“You don’t have any of the safety features that help regain the vehicle if gets into a sideways shift or yaw.”

Mr Tennent also said Mr Campbell was driving with summer tyres and that approaching 7C the traction of the tyres gradually dropped off.

Eliot McDonald, a qualified mechanic with 38 years experience who examines vehicles for SA Police’s Major Crash section said the rear tyres were worn down so far the warning indicators could be clearly seen.

However, other than the tyres he said the vehicle was functioning normally before the crash.

“Apart from the poor condition of the rear tyres I formed the opinion that the vehicle had been in reasonable condition prior to the collision and I could find nothing mechanically wrong that would have contributed towards or caused the collision,” he said.
