Just three SA hospitals make list of the nation’s top 65 in Newsweek’s global rankings

A list of the top 65 hospitals in Australia includes just three from SA – the $2.4bn RAH, Flinders … and a totally left-field one for number 48.

South Australian hospitals have failed to rank in the top 10 of the nation’s best hospitals according to a global ranking – and only three made the top 65 in the country.

The $2.4bn flagship Royal Adelaide Hospital ranked 14, Flinders Medical Centre came in at 33 and Whyalla Hospital was listed at 48.

Lyell McEwin Hospital – where the “worst ever” ramping was filmed by the Opposition earlier this month – the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Modbury Hospital and Noarlunga Hospital failed to make the top 65.

The Women’s and Children’s Hospital did not feature in the list of the top five “specialised” hospitals.

The ranking was conducted by American news magazine Newsweek with global data firm Statista which for five years have run an annual list of what it calls the World’s Best Hospitals.

It ranked more than 2300 hospitals in 28 countries.

No South Australian hospital made its list of the top 250 global hospitals for 2023 which featured seven Australian hospitals, led by Sydney Royal Prince Alfred at 66 and Melbourne’s The Alfred at 98.

It also listed the best hospitals by various countries, and each country list includes a listing of its top specialty hospitals.

Newsweek global editor-in-chief Nancy Cooper prefaced the list by noting Covid put unprecedented stress on health systems, as has inflation and global financial uncertainty.

“In the US and around the world, leading hospitals are dealing with rising costs, ageing populations and a medical workforce exhausted from battling a global pandemic,” she said.

“Among the hallmarks of great hospitals, however, are not just first-class care, first-class research and first-class innovation.

“The very best institutions also share another quality: consistency. The world’s best hospitals consistently attract the best people and provide the best outcomes for patients as well as the most important new therapies and research.

“Of all the hospitals in the world, relatively few can do all those things year in and year out. The best belong to a very exclusive club.”

Ms Cooper said the goal of the listing is to provide a data-based comparison of hospital reputation and performance across countries.

“We hope this will be useful to patients and families seeking the best care for themselves and loved ones, as well as to hospitals as they benchmark themselves against their peers,” she said.

SA Health responded to the rankings with this statement: “While it’s nice to see Newsweek give international recognition to some of SA Health’s facilities, all of our doctors, nurses and health professionals work hard to deliver high-quality care across the state.

“We’re also delivering more beds, more staff, more resources and lifesaving virtual technologies, which will make certain we continue to provide outstanding healthcare now and in years to come.
