SA Opposition leader backs prediction of Liberal win at next state election

Josh Teague has been named deputy leader of the South Australian Liberals, following the resignation of John Gardner last week.

Mr Teague, the member for Heysen, appeared at a press conference alongside Opposition Leader Vincent Tarzia to announce his appointment on Wednesday morning.

He was elected to the position unopposed after no other candidates nominated.

Mr Teague served as Speaker, Planning and Local Government minister, and held the responsibilities of Attorney-General at various points during the Marshall Liberal government.

Since his election to parliament in 2018, he has also helped to deliver infrastructure projects including the Crafers Park and Ride upgrade and the expansion of lanes between the Crafers and Stirling Freeway exits. Prior to his political career, he worked as a barrister.

Mr Teague nominated for party leader following the Liberals’ 2022 election loss, and again following the resignation of David Speirs in August.

Mr Tarzia said he was looking forward to working alongside Mr Teague as the Liberals prepare for the 2026 state election.

“While we are deeply appreciative of John Gardner’s significant contributions, this is an opportunity for Josh to bring fresh energy and perspective to the Liberal leadership team,” he said.

Mr Teague said he is honoured to be elected to the role and is eager to help lead the charge in presenting a strong alternative government to the people of South Australia.

“The next 15 months are crucial for the South Australian Liberal Party, and I am grateful for the opportunity to join our leadership team as we prepare for the state election,” he said.

“I am more committed than ever to supporting our local community, advocating for enhanced services, and driving stronger economic opportunities and more resilient communities.”

Last week, Mr Gardner announced he would step down from the deputy leadership immediately and quit state parliament at the 2026 election, declaring “it is time to move on”.

He said a health scare had led him to assess his priorities, and he was looking forward to spending more time with his wife and two young children.

“Whatever comes next, I can’t wait to be a more present and active dad in our kids’ lives,” he said.
