Senator Jacinta Nampijinpa Price is calling for the federal government to audit its millions of dollars in funding to the trouble-plagued Davenport Community Council amid allegations it has not provided key services.
The Aboriginal Lands Trust (ALT) has claimed that Davenport Community Council (DCC) has not delivered some of its key programs and services, despite receiving $2m in ongoing federal funding since 2021 through the National Indigenous Australians Agency (NIAA).
The money was meant to fund a youth centre, playgroup and school holiday program, to be held in a building that sits empty, decrepit and its entrance covered in dusty cobwebs.
The ALT told the Sunday Mail it took temporary control of the Davenport
community, near Port Augusta and 310km north west of Adelaide, from July 2020 until October 2023 and the DCC had failed to pick up the key to the facility since then.
Senator Price, the opposition spokesperson for Indigenous Australians, said , “this is yet another demonstration of why we need an audit into Indigenous spending which is in absolute disarray thanks to the Albanese government”.
“Aside from the allegations about program delivery, the reports of overdue financial reporting by this organisation is of great concern.”
The Sunday Mail asked NIAA if it would be conducting an audit into claims DCC had not delivered key services it was funded for and it said: “NIAA takes allegations of non-delivery seriously.”
NIAA conducts regular assessments and maintains consistent communication in Davenport and with DCC.
The DCC has been contacted for comment.
