Iconic Planet nightclub sign for sale asking $5000

For those clubbing in the ‘90s and early ‘00s, The Planet Nightclub was the place to party. Now its iconic signage is up for grabs.

The signage for one of Adelaide’s most iconic nightclubs has been listed online for sale.

Emily Dowd placed an advertisement for The Planet nightclub sign on Facebook Marketplace for $5000 less than 24 hours ago.

Ms Dowd obtained the Pirie St club sign after her husband found it in the attic of a customer whose house he was working at in 2019.

“My husband purchased it from the client after a few weeks negotiating back and forth as the client was not willing to let it go,” she told The Advertiser.

After a decent clean, the sign has been hanging the couple’s study for the last four years but a decision to turn the study into their son’s playroom has inspired the decision to sell.

Ms Dowd said she has had five inquires to purchase so far and the listing has almost 40 shares on Facebook.

The Planet nightclub at 77-79 Pirie Street.

Ms Dowd has fond memories of “the smell of Midori Illusions mixed with cigarette smoke” at the nightclub where she spent many nights during its time from 1994 to 2004.

“(I) use to love the R&B room the best back then,” she said.

While Ms Dowd is “sad” to see the sign go she’ll be “happy to see it go to someone who has great memories there”.

“We have had the pleasure of staring at it on the wall for four years now,” she said.

Ms Dowd is asking for at least $5000 for the iconic sign.

“(We’re) not desperate to sell so will just wait for the right buyer,” she said.

The Planet nightclub sat abandoned for more than a decade after its closure in 2004 a multimillion-dollar legal battle.

Opening in 1994 The Planet was renowned for its popular themed ‘80s nights.
