More then 200 community groups have been funded to help their members with economic hardship during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The groups will be told on Thursday they have been granted up to $10,000 each, a total of $1.4m distributed to 185 charity, multicultural, service and other community organisations.
Human Services Minister Michelle Lensink said funding had been granted for a wide
range of projects including food relief, personal protection equipment for volunteers, as well as for items including IT equipment to enable staff and volunteers to operate from home.
“We know many South Australians have been doing it tough throughout COVID – and these
grants are aimed to help organisations that support our most vulnerable,” Ms Lensink said.
“These one-off grants are helping organisations continue to operate in changed and
challenging circumstances, because we know the coronavirus pandemic has affected the
capacity to deliver worthy projects – and they’re helping deliver much-need support across
our community.”
The State Government this year launched ongoing COVID-19 relief funding based on applications from needy groups, with a total of $3.35m.
New applications are now being assessed and Ms Lensink said organisations would be favoured that provided help for already disadvantaged people who were under even more pressure because of the pandemic.
“If your organisation needs support to continue providing services, adapt your existing
programs or provide new programs and services to meet the needs of vulnerable and
disadvantaged South Australians I really urge people to apply,” she said.
Examples of the 38 organisation which were granted the maximum $10,000 are;
AUSTRALIA Sri Lanka Association for COVID-19 assistance.
CANCER Patients Foundation Limited.
CIRCLE of Friends Australia for asylum seekers and refugees.
CYSTIC Fibrosis SA home support.
ENCOUNTER Youth online training.
Ms Lensink said many community groups had been forced to modify services because of COVID-19, and protect their volunteers, over and above their normal budgets.
“Funding is prioritised for organisations directly impacted by COVID-19 – including groups
that have needed to adapt services to meet increased demand, or have continued providing
services while meeting tighter public health requirements,’’ she said.
“All applications are assessed against common criteria by a panel of experts and those that
score highly are recommended for funding.”
