The human remains believed to be of a missing snorkeller have been found – and his family now believes he was not killed by a shark.

A member of the public made the discovery at a beach off Finger Point Road, Port MacDonnell – close to where Duncan Craw, 32, vanished – just before 1.30pm on Tuesday.

Mr Craw was on a camping trip to South Australia with wife Taylia and son Levi when he disappeared about 5pm on Thursday.

Rescue crews recovered his significantly damaged wetsuit and snorkelling equipment and police said they believed he had been the victim of a shark attack.

But in a statement released on Tuesday, Mr Craw’s family said they believed the beloved father, who would have turned 33 last Saturday, had suffered a medical episode.

“We will be bringing Duncan home to Warrnambool. It brings us comfort to know that he would passed away peacefully in the water,” they said.

“While we may never know for sure, based on the evidence we do have, we now believe it is most likely Duncan suffered a medical episode long before the arrival of the shark.

“We want everyone to know that the ocean is a safe place of peace and beauty for us. We will keep enjoying the outdoors, remembering Duncan as we do.”

Police said the remains would be forensically tested and a report prepared for the State Coroner.

A family statement released the day after Mr Craw disappeared described him as a cheerful, loving, helpful son, a kind and cheeky brother and a fun-loving, mischievous and supportive mate with a heart of gold.

“It’s impossible to adequately describe our grief and shock,” they said. “We wish this was all a bad dream.

“It’s also impossible to fully explain the hole this will leave behind in the lives of all the relatives and friends who love Duncan.

“Duncan loved snorkelling and accepted the dangers he may face in the ocean. He was extremely unlucky this time.”

A GoFundMe page has been opened to help support Taylia and Levi.
