Adelaide's lunchtime news update -- June 6, 2019

Three bearded dragons and a python were rescued from a house fire in Adelaide’s north on Thursday.

The blaze at Elizabeth East caused $40,000 in damages and started when a pillow fell onto a bar heater.

The occupants managed to get out safely with their pet python, named Sapphire, but the thick smoke forced them to abandon attempts to snatch the lizards.

But metropolitan firefighters saved the day, rescuing the reptiles.

The blaze comes as police investigate a suspicious unit fire at Elizabeth Park late on Wednesday.

Just after 11.30pm, police and MFS crews were called to Davey Street after reports of a unit on fire.

MFS crews extinguished the blaze, which started after a burning wheelie bin was placed against the front door of the vacant unit.

The blaze quickly spread to the carport causing an estimated $50,000 structural damage to the premises.

Crime scene investigators examined the fire ravaged unit yesterday as they launched a hunt for the arsonists.

Police, who doorknocked house for information, believe it was not a random attack.

They are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed suspicious activity in the area to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
