Homeless man Brett Nicholls and dog Molly finds new home
A HOMELESS man, whose missing dog was found by good Samaritans on social media, has found a permanent home.
- Homeless man reunited with lost dog
- Crisis point in Adelaide’s southern suburbs for homelessness
- Homeless wait more than 10 years for housing in the Riverland
BRETT Nicholls thought he had seen goodwill when he was reunited with his lost dog.
But that was just the beginning. Now the formerly homeless man has a roof over his head and has been flooded with donations from kind-hearted people.
Mr Nicholls, 48, and his 12-year-old kelpie Molly moved into government housing on Tuesday. More than $5000 has been raised on a GoFundMe online fundraiser to help Mr Nicholls buy a 2005 Peugeot 307 wagon, a TV, sandwich press, phone credit, internet and other household items.
Mr Nicholls was reunited with his furry companion after she went missing from Rundle Mall — where her owner was sleeping rough — for 24 hours earlier this month. After a Facebook post was shared more than 3000 times and a public group set up, Molly was found at a Magill vet and a kind stranger drove Mr Nicholls to pick her up.
Since then, the public support has grown into raising money to keep Mr Nicholls and Molly off the streets.
An anonymous man also paid for the pair to stay in a motel for 15 days during the wintry weather before Mr Nicholls confirmed a place with Housing SA.
“Thank you, I’ve put a post up on Molly’s Facebook page thanking people, you know who you are,” Mr Nicholls said.
“I didn’t ask for any of these but now I’ve got a house and a car, I’m thankful.”
He is on a six-month lease before Housing SA finds a more permanent home.
