No occupants were believed to be home at the time of the blaze.
Firefighters remain on scene putting out any hot spots around the property.
SAPOL are also on scene and fire-cause investigators are expected to attend the scene on Tuesday evening.
James Rd is closed between Old Belair Rd and Sheoak Rd with motorists asked to avoid the area.
It comes just a day after a large fire broke out in a historic building on Kangaroo Island.
Just before 6pm on Monday, emergency services were called to the Seaview Motel, at Kingscote, after the blaze started in the kitchen of the adjoining restaurant, The Odd Plate.
The damage bill was originally estimated to reach about $500,000.
But the CFS said on Tuesday they managed to salvage more than they initially expected and the bill would be revised down.
