Hit list: Suburbs set to be targeted for load shedding by SA Power Networks

A SWAG of suburbs in Adelaide’s northwest is next on the blackout hit list for electricity load shedding.
Areas supplied from the Woodville power substation will be the first to go out, if SA Power Networks is again ordered to cut supply to maintain a stable electricity grid and avert the prospect of another statewide blackout.
The next suburbs in the firing line for staged blackouts include Woodville Gardens, Wingfield, Pennington, Rosewater and Woodville.
They are in the next of 22 groups of about 30-40 areas across the state on the load shedding list — effectively a roster for the planned supply cuts.
Load shedding is triggered infrequently, when there is an imbalance between electricity consumption and supply — mostly at times of peak demand in heatwaves when air conditioners spike power use.
Part of group nine and group ten are those likely to suffer next, depending on the scale of the cuts. These groups comprise north-western Adelaide suburbs.
As revealed exclusively by the Advertiser.com.au on Thursday, power was cut to more than 90,000 households and businesses over about 45 minutes on Wednesday night, when AEMO required a 100-megawatt supply cut. This affected other parts of group nine.
Load shedding outages last between 30-45 minutes and the number of affected suburbs depend on the amount of supply SA Power Networks, which operates the distribution network, is required to cut by the Australian Energy Market Operator, which runs the national grid.
The CBD, hospitals, prisons and other areas with critical infrastructure are exempt from the list, which is determined by the Office of the Technical Regulator, responsible for overseeing energy and plumbing safety in South Australia.
SA Power Networks stakeholder relations manager Paul Roberts said the suburb list was based on sharing the impact of load shedding.
“It is called rotational manual load shedding — rotational because the outage for each customer group will only last about 30-45 minutes to minimise the impact on customers, and manual because it requires some human intervention to initiate and manage the rotation,” Mr Roberts said.
“We only get five to ten minutes advance warning from AEMO of the need for rotational load shedding, which needs to be triggered manually, so we can’t provide advance warning.”
Mr Roberts said the information from the national market operator changed rapidly in a “complex and fast-moving environment”.
The scale of load shedding depends on the shortfall in generation within the state, meaning it can also be called to a halt suddenly if the imbalance between consumption and supply is corrected.
Automatic load shedding was triggered in November, 2015, when the high-voltage interconnector between SA and Victoria tripped and cut supplies to about 110,000 homes.
More than half the state was plunged into chaos in December, 1999, when about 400,000 of the-then ETSA’s 780,000 customers suffered power cuts for up to about 50 minutes.
Transmission network operator ElectraNet SA started the rotational load shedding about 2pm and, on average, each customer was without power for 90 minutes.
