A man left unconscious after an alleged attack on Hindley Street says he has had to learn how to walk and speak again, and will require rehab treatment for at least two years.
20-year-old Jordan Dodd was allegedly coward-punched and bashed by Craig Sansbury-Weetra outside the Australian Pizza House on Hindley Street in the early hours of August 11.
The incident, which was caught on CCTV camera, appears to show Mr Dodd standing up in a group before his alleged attacker punched him in the head and knocked him to the ground.
On Tuesday, Mr Dodd spoke about the ordeal for the first time, telling 7News Adelaide that he lost function in the right side of his body, and will require rehab for the next two years.
“I couldn’t move my right side, I was just forcing myself to walk,” he told 7News.
“I used to be right handed, but now it’s like, I’m left handed and have to do everything with my left.”
Mr Dodd was in a coma at the Royal Adelaide Hospital for three weeks following the alleged assault, with his girlfriend and family by his side.
His girlfriend, who was present during the incident, told 7News Adelaide about the three weeks in hospital, and what Mr Dodd now has to live with.
“He didn’t open his eyes for three weeks which made the doctors go, ‘that’s a bit alarming’, because even in a coma you get a twitch, like, he wasn’t moving,” she said.
“I got told, well the whole family did, to brace for the worst pretty well.
“He had holes drilled through his skull, because he had internal bleeding and external bleeding … he has to live with this for the rest of his life. “
The accused, Mr Sansbury-Weetra will face court again next week charged with one basic count, each of recklessly causing serious harm, and causing harm with intent.
