A new hotel and luxury retreat pods are set to built as part of upgrades to an Adelaide Hills golf club.

Plans for the upgrades to Stirling Golf Club, which also include a new clubhouse facility, a pro-shop and improvements to the to the 18-hole course have been submitted and are up for discussion.

The tourist accommodation will have three to five levels and will comprise 56 units, 15 two-bedroom services apartments, 15 three-bedroom serviced apartments and two penthouse spaces.

There will be 17 luxury private retreats built as part of the development.

Mount Lofty Golf Estate filed the development plans for the project, which will also include two parking areas to accommodate for 200 spaces.

Trees are expected to be removed to make room for the development of the Golflinks Rd site.

However, the development report state the works that “on balance, the proposed development results in neutral to positive environmental, social and economic impact”.

Construction is set to begin on the project at the end of 2024.

The works are set to be completed by 2025, to mark the club’s 100th year in operation and align with centenary celebrations.

Written submissions on the plans for public comment are encouraged until August 16.

The plans have been discussed since last year, when business leaders said the $40m golf course accommodation development planned for Stirling will help the Hills draw more tourists to stay in the area for longer.

James Sexton, chairman of Business Mount Barker and Regional Development Australia’s Adelaide Hills, Fleurieu and Kangaroo Island branch, said at the time there was a “huge demand” for more accommodation in the Hills.

“In that area I think it would be extremely successful,” he said, adding the region also needed improved sports facilities.

His comments were backed by Adelaide Hills Tourism board chairman Martin Radcliffe, who said extra accommodation would help businesses entice visitors to spend more time exploring the region.

“Sporting infrastructure is really important and if you can combine sporting infrastructure with tourist infrastructure you’re bringing extra impetus for people to come to the Hills, which is great,” he said.

In 2020, the Stirling Golf Course hit the market with a price guide of $3 million.

The Advertiser has contacted the club for comment.
