Group of train drivers requests 2 per cent pay rises over three years, separate to those represented by Rail, Tram and Bus Union

A group of train drivers has called for a ballot on a new pay deal – separate to the one yesterday by a transport union.

How do Australia’s train networks compare to one another?

A group of 120 train drivers organised as a rival to those who are union members, wants its alternative pay rise proposal put to a ballot.

The drivers, who have as their representative industrial consultant Gary Collis, have agreed to accept annual pay increases of two per cent over three years, a rival bid to the Rail, Tram and Bus Union proposal of four per cent each year over four years.

Mr Collis, a former State Workplace Ombudsman and director of Australian Employment Alliance, said the drivers had approached him to act on their behalf.

He said the pay dispute could be resolved by Treasurer Rob Lucas, who opposes the union plan, if he agreed to a ballot conducted by the State Electoral Commission to settle the matter.

“Two per cent each year is fair because in this climate there are so many thousands unemployed and businesses which will never recover,” Mr Collis said.

“Two per cent annually over three years is bloody good.

“The Treasurer should go to a ballot immediately and let all the drivers vote.”

There are around 250 train drivers in South Australia, with industrial action likely if agreement can’t be reached.

Mr Lucas said it was refreshing to see that Mr Collis’ group had come to the negotiating table in good faith and were “making more sensible proposals to achieve a new agreement”.
