An argument on a footy club awards night over rumours about an affair led to a man allegedly being bashed in his front yard in front of his son, a jury has heard.

Brothers Brodie, 28, and Riley Barker, 31, are standing trial accused of bashing Grant Fielke after a confrontation at the Gawler South Football Club.

The pair have pleaded not guilty to charges of recklessly causing serious harm and intentionally causing serious harm on September 21, 2019.

Tim Preston, opening the trial for the prosecution, said it would be argued the brothers had formed an agreement to attend the Fielke home in Hewett and cause harm to Mr Fielke.

“There was a rumour that Brodie Barker had been having an affair with the wife of a former player,” he said.

Giving evidence, Mr Fielke told the jury he had attended the awards night until the early hours of the morning.

He said he had heard a rumour Brodie Barker had sex with a former player’s wife in the club’s trophy room.

Mr Fielke said about 2am Brodie had approached him and accused his son of spreading the rumour.

“He had hold of my blazer and was pushing me and telling me to come outside,” he told the jury.

“He had a Coke with some kind of alcohol in it. He poured it over me and threw it in my face.

“He was pushing me towards the door. He was swung his right fist at my face and missed.

“I knew I was in imminent danger and threw three or four consecutive punches. I think two connected.”

A bartender broke up the fight and the Fielke family was ushered out the back door to an Uber.

After returning home Mr Fielke went to bed but was later woken by his son who had received a call from one of the brothers.

“He said if we don’t go out there, he is coming through the front door,” he said.

While outside, Mr Fielke told the jury he was being jumper-punched by Riley, while he had his hands up pleading for him to leave the property. He described Brodie as being “out of control” and “beating his chest” while yelling and screaming.

He recalled being “hit with a huge fist” by Brodie on the right side of his face, which caused bruising and damage to his eye that later required a six-hour surgery. He said the injury continues to cause facial numbness and a lack of feeling across the right-hand side of his face.

Mr Fielke told the court members of the Gawler South Football Club came to his house after the incident and discussed keeping the matter “in house”.

But, he said he reported the incident to police two days later.

“I got a phone call to say that Gawler South Football Club were not going to pursue it and I should do it of my own accord,” he said.

The trial is continuing.
