THE Development Assessment Commission has approved plans by Oceanic Victor to set up a tuna-pen tourist attraction near Granite Island, in the sheltered Victor Harbor bay.
The proposal, for the pilot lease of 12ha in the waters to establish a cage in which to grow southern bluefin tuna for tourists to swim with and feed, has drawn opposition from many throughout the seaside towns, who fear the facility will be “a shark magnet”.
Surfers and yachtsmen were among those who attended a DAC hearing in Adelaide on Thursday to consider the proposal.
Nisa Schebella said there would be at least a strong perception that sharks will be seen in greater numbers along the area’s popular beaches as a result of the tuna pen.
“We currently swim and surf in relative safety and that is one of the main attractions of our beaches,’’ she said.
“The perception that this tuna pen will attract sharks, as appears to be the case in other areas with similar facilities, will put these tourists off.’’
It is understood the only condition placed on the approval is a requirement for the facility to be painted grey.
