PROSPECT Oval's 90-year-old grandstand will be redeveloped to provide a public gym and function centre by the middle of next year.
The project will cost $3.63 million and will be funded by the Federal Government, North Adelaide Football Club and Prospect Council.
Prospect Mayor David O'Loughlin said the Federal Government's $1.75 million commitment meant the project finally would go ahead.
"It's very exciting," he said. "This development will benefit the whole community because the fitness centre will be open to the public."
North Adelaide Football Club already had committed $1.63 million and the council $250,000 to the project. It will provide a fitness centre with a lap pool and modern function centre.
Council chief executive Mark Goldstone said building would begin in August, with the project to be completed by June 30, 2011.
In the deal, a partnership will be formed with Port Augusta Council to promote indigenous football programs at the North Adelaide Football Club.
