THE Government says South Road has reopened to traffic between Anzac Hwy and Cross Rd this morning, after crews worked around the clock to install steel fixings to stabilise the faulty overpass that forced the closure.

“Bridge beam secured overnight — thanks to all workers involved. Now the work starts on finding cause and engineering a long-term solution,” Transport Minister Stephen Mullighan tweeted this morning.

South Rd — between Anzac Hwy and Cross Rd — was closed about 7am on Wednesday after a 100m stretch of the bikeway and pedestrian overpass, that runs alongside the tram line, tilted and debris fell on to the main arterial road.

The much-needed reopening was delayed when thunderstorms on Thursday night forced crews off site.

Three steel fixings have now been installed to stabilise the overpass.

Trams are also servicing stop 6 on South Rd but the Mike Turtur Bikeway remains closed, the Government said this morning.

Earlier, Mr Mullighan said the closure was “an enormous frustration” but said crews were working around the clock to repair the 1.2km stretch of road between Anzac Hwy and Cross Road.

Mr Mullighan said he was happy to have discussions with local businesses about compensation through Small Business Commissioner John Chapman, after previously dismissing the idea.

“We’ve seen reports ... about how some businesses have suffered and have been inconvenienced and while we have tried to help in a very small way in the interim — sending workers down to the small businesses for example to try and give them a bit of extra custom — we know there are other businesses that are likely to be impacted who are out of pocket so we are willing to consider that,” he said.

Opposition transport spokesman David Pisoni said Mr Mullighan had again “shifted the goalposts” about the reopening date.

“The Minister’s story changes every day. He’s either not on top of what’s happening here or he’s withholding information from the public,” he said.

Meanwhile, in other traffic news, trams are not running between Victoria Square and Adelaide Railway Station today, due to the Tour Down Under. Services will resume at 8pm. Several road closures are also in place in the CBD, including King William Rd.
