A man who ignored warnings about his severely malnourished dog has been sentenced to home detention.
The Golden Grove man, 34, appeared in the Elizabeth Magistrates Court on Thursday after pleading guilty last month to a charge of animal ill-treatment.
An RSPCA inspector first attended the offender’s home on October 9, 2019, following a tip-off.
There, they found three dogs and determined that one of them, a bull mastiff named Boss, was underweight and gave the owner feeding advice.
A council employee visited the home three weeks later and found the dog’s condition had improved.
However, on November 18, the same inspector passed on photos to the RSPCA showing Boss’s condition had worsened since earlier giving the all-clear.
The RSPCA raided the house three days later and found it unattended.
All three dogs had lost weight and were seized, with Boss’s condition “causing the most concern”, an RSPCA spokeswoman said.
Boss was found to weigh just under 35kg, well below an ideal weight of 50kg.
He was later happily rehomed and died last year at the age of 10.
The offender was sentenced to one month on home detention and prohibited from owning any other animals.
