Glamourous SANFL WAGS fired up for Magarey Medal count - even with their footy scarves

ALICE James, partner of last year's joint Magarey Medal winner Joel Cross, has a simple wish for the SANFL's night of nights.

ALICE James, partner of last year's joint Magarey Medal winner Joel Cross, has a simple wish for the SANFL's night of nights.

"I just hope I don't trip up on the red carpet," Ms James laughed, ahead of the Magarey Medal presentation at AAMI Stadium.

"I'm a bit of a tomboy...I'm not very good at being a WAG. I'm much more comfortable at the footy in a beanie and scarf."

The stunning blonde definitely looked the part this week, as she caught up with fellow SANFL partners and girlfriends Belinda Chambers (South Adelaide's Michael Wundke), Hanna Holtmann (West Adelaide's Chris Schmidt) and Teegan Dolling (Brayden O'Hara).

The dazzling quartet are looking forward to glamming up for Tuesday night's glamorous black tie event, which will decide local footy's best and fairest player.

Ms James said she's anticipating a more laid-back evening after the excitement of Cross's medal win last year, an honour which he shared with Central District's Brad Symes.

"It was very unexpected last year," said Ms James, who will be wearing a black and white dress by boutique Adelaide designer Col Jitters.

"I think this year will be a bit more relaxed; I'm a bit more used to it. Joel doesn't think he'll win this year, he's playing it down."

Ms Dolling, who will be dressed in Manning Cartell, has come over from Albury, in NSW, to attend her first Magarey Medal.

Her partner O'Hara took out The Advertiser's SANFL Player of the Year Award this season.

"He's had a great year, it's just based on opinions obviously but I hope he goes well," Ms Dolling said.

"It's just a good night to get dolled up and dressed up and hopefully support the boys."

With so much focus on the outfits of the players' wives and girlfriends, Ms Dolling admits there can be some anxiety amongst the WAGs.

"I don't feel too much pressure myself but I can imagine some girls do feel the pressure," she said. "You have to feel comfortable." But it's up to them to wear what they want to wear and feel comfortable in your own skin."

"If it's too much pressure, maybe just don't go."

Port Adelaide midfielder Sam Gray is the favourite for the medal, along with Norwood pair Matt Thomas and Matt Suckling, West Adelaide's Schmidt and Central District's James Boyd.

If Thomas wins, it will be the second year in a row the SANFL's highest individual honour has gone to an AFL-listed player after Adelaide Crow Symes shared last year's award with Joel Cross.

Boyd will be hoping to make up for last year's disappointment when he polled the most votes but was ruled ineligible due to suspension.

Players and their partners are expected to walk the red carpet from 6.30pm.
