HISTORIC black-and-white pictures of Adelaide and its landmark buildings have been remastered in colour as part of a celebration of the city’s heritage.
Adelaide City Council commissioned artist Marina Amaral to colourise archival images – some more than a century old – depicting bustling city streetscapes and buildings such as the Beehive Corner and Elder Hall.
Her work is on display in Rundle Mall until April 8 to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the council’s heritage incentive scheme, which has provided more than $20 million in grants to help property owners repair and restore heritage-listed buildings.
Adelaide City Council has 2497 – one- fifth – of all of the state’s heritage-listed buildings. Lord Mayor Martin Haese says the scheme is the most substantial local government heritage grant program in Australia.
He said each dollar invested via the incentive scheme returned $1.68 to the economy and supported 3000 jobs.
“I would suggest to all South Australians (that) when they bring visitors here – from interstate and overseas – the first thing they say is ‘you’ve got beautiful buildings here’ and we should never underestimate the impact of that,” he says.
“We have kept so many that I think it’s pretty good for our brand.”
