More than $9m will be allocated to improving 20 dangerous crash sites on South Australian roads as part of the latest round of federal Black Spot Program funding.

Upgrades will include an 8.5km section of Montacute Rd, with $1.14m in funding; Naracoorte Rd at Keppoch to install a safety barrier and rumble strips, with $1.3m funding and $1.5m for Piggott Range Rd at Chandlers Hill to improve curves and install guardrails.

Barker MP and SA Black Spot Consultative Panel chairman Tony Pasin said the funding would deliver safer roads throughout the state.

“The high-priority locations we are funding have seen a total of four fatal and 126 crashes causing injuries recorded over the past five years,” he said.

Mr Pasin said research showed Black Spot projects reduced the number of crashes causing death and injury by 30 per cent.

Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce said the program will reduce the risk of serious crashes.

“The Black Spot Program funds safety measures such as traffic signals and roundabouts at locations where a number of serious crashes are known to have occurred or are at risk of occurring,” Mr Joyce said.

The announcement comes after South Australia experiences its second deadliest start to a year on the road.

There have been 57 lives lost on the state’s roads so far this year, including 15 during March – the worst month for fatalities since August 2017.

Compared to the same date as this article was published last year, the state’s road toll was 52.
