MAJOR high schools including Glenunga International, Henley and Roma Mitchell will be among the first 50 SA public schools to switch to online NAPLAN testing this year.

The mix of primary and secondary campuses from across the state was chosen based on their success in widespread trials that assessed schools’ readiness for the transition.

Among the Adelaide primary schools are Blackwood, Ingle Farm, Elizabeth Vale, Sheidow Park and Warradale, while high schools include Banksia Park International, Le Fevre, Pasadena and Seaton.

Area schools at Ceduna, Karoonda, Keith, Lock and Yankalilla, along with Murray Bridge and Riverton and District high schools, are among the country schools set to make the change.

The Adelaide Hills area is overrepresented with nine schools stretching from Paracombe to Meadows.

All Australian schools must move from pen and paper to computer testing by 2019.

The SA Education Department initially intended to have as many schools as possible do the literacy and numeracy tests electronically this year.

But last month The Advertiser revealed the trials, conducted in more than 90 per cent of public schools last year, found only half were ready because of technical issues.

The State Government decided to further restrict the proportion of schools going online to 10 per cent, in line with the national average for 2017, as a result of fears that comparisons of results between online and pen and paper tests would be unfair.

Education Department executive director for partnerships, schools and preschools Anne Millard yesterday said: “With a smaller number of schools transitioning, we will be able to provide individual schools with more intensive support in the lead up to and during the test period.”

The department said feedback from the trials had “highlighted key areas for extra support

such as information technology and additional training”.

Any of the 50 chosen schools could revert to paper tests if issues arose “outside of the school’s control”.

SA principals had consistently warned that a large scale move to online testing ahead of other states would disadvantage SA, based on international experience showing students generally perform worse when they first do online tests.

In December a national decision was made that all Year 3 persuasive/narrative writing tests will remain paper-based because of concerns many young children had not developed adequate typing skills.

Online NAPLAN tests will be held from May 9-19, a longer period than the May 9-11 timetable for paper tests. The online tests are designed to produce more accurate evaluations of student abilities. Results will also be delivered to schools and parents much faster.
