Agriculture is booming in popularity among this year’s crop of university aspirants, and they’re an arty bunch as well.
First preference applications for agriculture and animal studies courses were up 19 per cent to 369. Among the top 10 disciplines, only art and design courses had a larger boost in demand, up 27 per cent to 612, according to SA Tertiary Admissions Centre data.
But on raw numbers, medicine and health courses remain by far and away the most popular, despite a slight dip to 4182 first preferences, while demand for education and teaching courses has plunged 10 per cent from last year.
To date, SATAC has processed 24,913 applications, a drop of 2 per cent that unis put down to a smaller cohort of Year 12s in 2018. Non-school leaver applications are slightly down too.
But universities have still made more than 18,000 offers, just a couple of hundred fewer than last year. Today, The Advertiser publishes 14,036 offers combining the main January round with the December first preference round.

Adelaide University undergraduate courses received more domestic first preference applications, up 2 per cent to 7235, and the uni is making 6 per cent more offers than last year at 5976.
Acting vice-chancellor Pascale Quester said the rise was pleasing in light of a declining overall student market. “In a highly competitive and shrinking market for higher education (it) is a vote of confidence in the educational experience our university offers,” Prof Quester said.
Adelaide University has increased offers to international students by 18 per cent to 6352, meaning it will have a record total of foreign students tipping over the 10,000 mark.
Flinders University received 5739 first preferences from domestic undergraduate applicants, down from 6019, and has made slightly fewer offers at 5045, but demand for its postgrad courses was up slightly. “Flinders continues to be the only university nationally to offer each and every student the opportunity to add innovation and enterprise to their studies, whatever degree they’re doing,” deputy vice-chancellor (students) Prof Clare Pollock said.
UniSA said it had more than 8500 undergraduate first preferences processed by SATAC, down from more than 9000 last year, and its offers have fallen from 7400 to 7100. Those numbers do not include UniSA Online courses, for which there have been more than 1000 applicants, though the uni would not say how many offers that translated to.
Adelaide University’s new course offerings include bachelor degrees in music theatre and peace and conflict studies, and a suite of postgrad cybersecurity qualifications.
Flinders has a new IT degree in simulation and serious games, and others in media and communications, and tourism and events.
In a sign of the times, UniSA is offering an arts degree with a social media specialty, as well new business degrees including one focused on real estate.
Mt Gambier UniSA students can now do a midwifery degree and a health diploma.
Adelaide’s highest ATAR cut-off was 99.95 for its environmental engineering course.
For Flinders it’s 99.85 for a bachelor of chemical science and master of materials engineering combo.
At UniSA it’s 99 for medical radiation science.
