Steven Marshall has taken to social media to tell the world he has started work in New York, leading a highly influential organisation devoted to strengthening the bond between Australia and the United States.
An Instagram post declared the former SA Premier’s new role has officially begun as president of the American Australian Association, which works “to promote and enhance the alliance between our two great nations”.
“My RM’s are freshly polished as I officially begin my new role,” Mr Marshall’s post declared.
As the United States prepares to change its leadership to Republican leader Donald Trump, Mr Marshall will oversee a range of association programs, including supporting the high-profile G’Day USA events promoting Australian business.
His new role announced in December last year begins amid reports of Trump’s aides developing tariff plans for countries exporting to the United States that are expected to impact the Australian economy.
It is also an important time for nurturing inter-country relations after the US promised nuclear submarines to Australia under the AUKUS pact.
The association has previously hosted meetings for American and Australian ambassadors and consul generals, Australian prime ministers, US presidents and other senior leaders from both countries.
Mr Marshall spent the first part of his career in the business sector before entering state parliament in 2010 and serving as SA Liberal Premier from 2018 to 2022.
He resigned from parliament early last year.
The American Australian Association was founded by Sir Keith Murdoch in 1948 and is the leading privately funded organisation supporting relations between the two countries.
Mr Marshall is replacing John Berry, who started as association president in 2016 after serving as US Ambassador to Australia from 2012 to 2016.
The association hosts events including the G’Day Arts Gala in Los Angeles, Anzac Day in New York, Australia House at SXSW in Texas, and the American Australian Defense Dialogue in Washington, D.C.
Its scholarships and exchanges provide opportunities for young American and Australian leaders to undertake study, research and professional or artistic development in each other’s country.
