A senior firefighter has collapsed, man has been arrested and police are investigating a separate blaze believed to be deliberately lit amid a spate of fires in Adelaide on Friday morning.

Firefighters were first called to a unit fire on Montreal Ave at Novar Gardens just after midnight.

They arrived to find the blaze had ripped through one unit and spread to another.

Both units were extensively damaged. Others in the same complex suffered smoke damage.

Residents had evacuated and no one was injured.

Authorities believe the fire was deliberately lit and detectives are assisting with the investigation.

Hours later, firefighters rushed to Aldridge Ave in at Plympton Park to find heavy smoke and flames coming from a property, just before 7am.

Police who also attended the scene said the house was fully engulfed in flames when they arrived.

Firefighters managed to extinguish the blaze in 20 minutes but the property was completely destroyed.

An MFS spokesperson said no one was home at the time but a senior MFS officer collapsed at the scene following a medical episode.

“The Officer was treated on scene by MFS and South Australian Ambulance Service (SAAS),” MFS said in a statement.

“He was then transported to the Royal Adelaide Hospital and will remain under observation for the next 24 hours.

“The safety and wellbeing of our firefighters is of great importance, and incidents like this have an impact on the whole service.”

“Our thoughts are with the firefighter and their family.

The MFS is providing support to all staff.

Fire cause investigators attended the scene to determine the cause.

A 39-year-old man was later arrested and charged with arson.

He will likely be refused bail to appear in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Monday, September 9.

Meanwhile, in Adelaide’s south, a blaze caused $50,000 in damage to a home in Moana.

Firefighters rushed to Seaside Blvd just before 12.30am to find smoke coming from the back of the property.

They extinguished the blaze within half an hour, preventing it from spreading to other homes.

An MFS spokeswoman said all occupants evacuated themselves before firefighters arrived at the scene and no one was injured.

Fire investigators believe the cause of the blaze is accidental.
