Fire destroys Hallett Cove home, two people in lucky escape

Neighbours rescued pet dogs from a terrifying Hallett Cove house fire, which gutted the home and caused $550k worth of damage.

Two people and their pet dogs have escaped without injury after their Hallett Cove home went up in flames just before midday on Friday.

Emergency services were called to Glenway Rd at 11.53am after reports of a house fire.

Twenty-two Metropolitan Fire Service firefighters from five trucks and two support vehicles arrived at the scene shortly after.

Wayne Trezise told 7NEWS the fire was already through the roof upon their arrival.

“Some of the roof was starting to collapse and the solar panels were collapsing as well,” he said.

Good Samaritan Daisy Kemboi rescued pet dogs Amy and Molly from the property after she saw the fire.

“We couldn’t see or hear anyone,” she told 7NEWS. “But I saw a small dog, then we grabbed the dog and then the other person grabbed the other dog. Then we brought them to our house.”

A neighbour told 7NEWS the saddest thing they saw was the homeowner standing outside their home.

“(She was) watching her house fall down,” he said.

The fire gutted the home and the roof collapsed inward during the inferno.

It took firefighters a total of 45 minutes to get the fire under control and another 35 minutes to extinguish it.

Two cats and a pet snake from the property are currently missing.

The fire has caused an estimated $550k of damage, but the cause is currently undetermined due to the extent of damage.
