A southern suburbs family’s home has turned to ash after a faulty solar panel isolator switch sparked a fierce blaze on Father’s Day.
Owner Chris Scragg told 7News how his Seaford Rise home went up in flames on Sunday.
He was back at the property on Wednesday checking to see if anything could be salvaged from the gutted home.
“I’ve done a lot of work to this place, it’s just all gone,” he said.
“But there’s a lot of people that have been worse off than us, you know,” he said.
The fire was caused by a faulty solar panel isolator switch which had only been checked six months before.
Darius Scragg was the only person home at the property when the fire started.
“I went out the back to check what was going on and the whole verandah was covered in black smoke,” he said.
“I didn’t really have time to go in and get pants or anything,” he said.
“Lucky I didn’t because I pretty much came out the door and within 20 to 30 seconds the roof just went down.”
While the home is insured, Chris’ children launched a GoFundMe page to assist them in the immediate future.
“We’re a strong family, we’ll get through it,” Darius said.
