The Australia drought: Bringing pain to local communities

Drought in South Australia is taking its toll on one of the state’s most iconic drinks — Farmers Union Iced Coffee.

Over the past couple of days, customers have noticed empty shelves where the two-litre bottles of the beloved milk drink should be.

The current owners of the famous SA beverage, Lion Dairy & Drinks, told The Advertiser drought conditions had impacted their supply.

“Extreme weather conditions — including drought, together with significant cost increases across water, feed and energy — have contributed to the challenges facing dairy production in Australia,” a spokeswoman said.

She said the two-litre product would be restocked on supermarket shelves this week.

“Lion Dairy & Drinks is a demand-driven business and this is reflected in the way we procure the right amount of milk to meet our customers’ needs.

“We’re experiencing an increase in demand for our dairy products and we were unable to source the additional milk to fulfil this volume.

“Unfortunately, as a result, we have had some intermittent supply shortfalls on some products. “We are doing all we can to source additional milk and continuing to communicate and work with our customers to mitigate against shortages and ensure that our dairy products are available on shelf.”

According to the Dairy Australia situation outlook, Australian milk production is forecast to fall to its lowest level in more than 20 years this season.
