LIGHTNING may have caused a shed to catch fire on a farm in the upper Yorke Peninsula.

Emergency services were called to Holman Rd, Kainton, near Paskeville at 11pm on Thursday to find the shed fully engulfed in flames.

Neighbours heard some loud popping sounds after a band of thunder passed over the area and had gone to investigate the noise when they found the shed on fire.

More than 25 firefighters and five appliances, including a water carrier, took 40 minutes to contain the blaze.

They stayed to make sure any spot fires in adjoining paddocks were extinguished quickly.

The 30m x 60m shed, containing tractors, trucks, hay and other farming equipment, was completely destroyed by the blaze.

The damage bill is estimated at $2 million and fire cause investigators are on scene.

No one was injured in the fire.
