The first person on the scene of a crash near Kapunda in the early hours of Sunday morning has recalled the devastating aftermath.
Emergency services were called to Thiele Highway, about 10km northwest of Kapunda after reports of a Toyota ute crashing and rolling into a paddock.
The driver and sole occupant of the car, a 29-year-old Eudunda man, died at the scene. He has been identified as devoted father Fletcher Obst.
The fatal crash happened on the property of John, 65, and Kathy Scobie, 59, about 12.30am.
Ms Scobie said she knew it was a bad crash from hearing the noise.
“I knew we had a crash on our property. I heard squealing and skidding and then I turned to John and said: ‘Sh*t. There’s been an accident’,” Ms Scobie said.
Mr Scobie said he drove down to the scene and saw the ute upside down with the driver still inside.
“The car was upside down and facing the road, the gentlemen was still in his seat, wearing a seatbelt and he was in severe pain,” Mr Scobie said.
“I feel bad for the gentleman because I moved away for phone signal to call emergency services and when I moved away he had passed away.”
The impact of the crash was visible on the old tree which lost its bark and the shards of glass and blood seen around the area.
The Scobies said about 10 emergency vehicles went to the scene, with the last vehicles leaving only in the morning.
The Scobie family are expecting the man’s family to come to their property to get their closure, and although the Scobies are aware it will be difficult, they are ready to talk.
The Thiele Highway was closed for several hours between Anlaby Road and School House Road as Major Crash officer investigated. They have since reopened.
The young man’s death is the second life lost on SA roads, compared to eight at this time last year.
